Marriage

Purpose of Marriage
Marriage, as described in the Bible, is instituted by God, with companionship as its first purpose. In (Genesis 2:18), the Lord God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him." God designed marriage so that man and woman could have a close relationship based on love, trust, and communication, bringing satisfaction to both.

"He who finds a wife, finds a good thing, and obtains favor from the Lord" (Proverbs 18:22).

What is Marriage
Marriage is a relationship that requires total faithfulness to love, cherish, and be true to each other exclusively. It is a permanent intimate bond blessed by God, meant to be dissolved only by death or rejection of the vow. The vows are what make a valid marriage, with no exclusions or conditions, so Christian marriage is ultimately founded on a commitment to each other before God.

Prioritize
The marriage covenant requires spouses to prioritize each other with the Lord at the center of their lives.

"Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh
(Ephesians 5:31)."

Dreams and Expectations
Realizing dreams and expectations for a successful marriage only happens when both partners are mutually giving and consistently putting in effort. Understanding this takes time but can help couples anticipate and, at times, prevent the disappointment that overshadows the hoped-for happiness in many marriages.

Stages of Marriage
When a couple first gets married, there is usually a time of excitement, enthusiasm, and idealism. As the couple grows older, months turn into years, careers develop, and children arrive and grow up. The marriage must change and mature if it is to stay healthy. However, it is important to protect the excitement and luster that once existed. The warmth, concern, communication, intimacy, and love will keep one committed to one's best friend in the golden years when companionship is so needed.

Scriptural passages
Scriptural passages such as:
(1 Corinthians 13), (Ephesians 5:21-6:4), (Colossians 3:16-21), (1 Corinthians 7), (1 Peter 3:1-7) should be read, discussed, understood, and applied to the couples relationship.

"Father, we pray that we would treat one another with all humility and gentleness, with patience, showing tolerance for one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the spirit in the bond of peace."  (Ephesians 4:2)
